What's proposed?

The proposed Institute is structured around the needs of scientists and engineers as they tackle grand challenge problems using sophisticated software-based techniques. The Institute will leverage the expertise of both the producers and consumers of these tools, to guarantee there is ample validation of our approach to building reliable and extensible scientific software. This environment will also provide a unique opportunity for the interdisciplinary education of our students.

The Institute will employ a number of software testbed projects to serve as a validation point of software technology at Northeastern University. A compact active core of lead personnel will be responsible for the advancement of the Institute. In addition, the participation of senior associates at Northeastern University as consultants to the Institute provides needed breadth, and makes more effective use of the broad software expertise available at Northeastern University.

The team of lead personnel plus senior associates includes most of the top researchers in software at Northeastern University. Due to their common interests, there is also a strong track record for successful collaborations, which also crosses department boundaries. Figure [*] documents successful joint grant proposals. It includes, for example, the current large scale grant proposal writing of Futrelle, Ondrechen and Budil, to take advantage of the breakthrough research of Prof. Ondrechen.
