What's our plan?

As an initial goal, the Institute will study three testbeds. Experience from three projects will be applied toward wider applications. The first two applications are internal to Northeastern University: The third application is external:

In the first two applications, the original software developers are directly available for consultation. The first application takes advantage of the breakthrough of Prof. Ondrechen. The Genomics and Proteomics applications advanced by the Institute will provide very high visibility for Northeastern University, since dozens of doctors around the world are already asking now for a polished version of the software. It will provide an acid test for the scalability of our approach (Section [*].)

The second application leverages the existing large scale software being developed by 0=0the Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems (CenSSIS4)CenSSIS. The Institute provides the added value so that the software can be retargeted toward new software applications beyond the scope of 1=0the Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems (CenSSIS5)CenSSIS (Sections [*] and [*].)

The third application is a test of the scalability of our work. The Geant4 application will test whether the Institute can take in-house techniques and apply them to large, pre-existing software with an large existing community (more than 100 developers and many thousands of users). Prof. Cooperman recently marked a milestone by successfully parallelizing that code (Section [*].)

The institute members are already deeply involved in the three testbed projects. This will provide a good source of complex scientific software on which to test our ideas of extending software beyond its initial design criteria. These applications will also provide an important opportunity to integrate practice-oriented, interdisciplinary education into the curriculum.
