Why and wherefore an Institute?
A key point here is the effort required to get such a project off the ground. The basic science is interesting and important from a number of theoretical as well as practical perspectives; however it also falls between the cracks of the research mission of existing units in the University. The educational opportunity for the undergraduate is of clear value; however finding funding to support this activity without a housing Institute in place is difficult. Thus, due to organizational and budgetary restrictions, we may not be currently achieving sufficient and timely progress toward securing substantially greater external funding.
The establishment of the Institute will allow us to overcome both difficulties by providing:
- A center for investigation of these important problems;
- A sources of stable funding from the University over a long enough period for the PIs to establish a collaborative research record which can and will be used as the basis for the acquisition of external support.
